Empty Bowls Fundraising

In addition to ticket sales for the soup luncheon, Empty Bowls Monongalia (EBM) raises funds through individual contributions from members of the community, churches, civic organizations, businesses, and foundations. Empty Bowls Monongalia has grown into a community wide effort helping the hungry and educating the public, raising more than $274,000 in just 8 years.

This past year, Empty Bowls provided $100,000 to seven meal feeding programs serving 132,630 meals, and to twelve food pantries making 25,950 distributions to those who do not have the resources to purchase groceries, and to four Backpack Programs distributing 38,350 backpacks to school children. The need is ever growing as the economy continues to decline. Many of these people are in their current situation through no fault of their own. They have lost their jobs, homes, and families. Some have returned from serving our country to find no employment opportunities. A real tragedy!

According to the latest statistics from Feeding America, an additional $7,613,000 is needed in our county this year alone to meet the needs of friends and neighbors who do not know from where their next meal will come.

2013 Statistics for Monongalia County:

  • 15.6% of the Monongalia County population is food insecure

2013 Statistics for Monongalia County children:

  • 16.4% (2,570) children in Mon County are food insecure
  • 33.9% (4,178) of all Mon County students qualify Free or Reduced Lunch

In light of today’s economy, the dollars required to meet the needs of this population will continue to grow. Due to these increasing needs, EBM has established a fundraising goal of $140,000 for the 2016 fundraising campaign.
